How long you can stay, and when

• 28 nights is the floor. Shorter stays are ordinary nightly reservations at ordinary nightly rates, not the monthly rate plan.
• 88 nights is the ceiling. Roughly three months, which covers the core of a Myrtle Beach winter.
• March comes with a condition. A March rental must also include the full month of February. You cannot book March on its own.
• There are no refunds for early departures. If you leave ahead of schedule, the booked term still stands.

Who qualifies

Two eligibility rules apply to the monthly rate plan, and both are firm:

• Guests must be 55 or older to qualify for the monthly rate.
• Residents of Horry, Marion, Georgetown and Brunswick counties are not eligible. The monthly plan is built for people travelling to the beach for the season, not for locals.

What you actually pay

The monthly rate is quoted per month and varies by room type and by month. On top of the monthly rate, expect:

• Applicable tax
• A 15% resort fee
• A cleaning fee
• A limited damage waiver fee, capped at $150 per month for studios and one-bedrooms

Payment runs on a simple schedule. A $250 deposit is due when you book. The balance of your first month is due at check-in, and each month after that is due by the 1st. If you cancel within 30 days of arrival, the $250 deposit is forfeited.

What weekly housekeeping covers

This is the question that catches people out, because a monthly rental is not serviced like a nightly hotel stay.

You get weekly housekeeping, which includes a change of sheets and towels. You do not get daily housekeeping. Between weekly services, towel exchange is available at the front desk.

For most snowbirds this is the right trade: a month of daily service would cost considerably more, and a winter stay is closer to living somewhere than to staying in a hotel. It is worth knowing going in rather than discovering in week two.

Choosing a room for a long stay

Four room types are offered on the monthly plan, and the distinction between oceanfront and ocean view is a real one here, not a marketing flourish:

• Oceanfront Efficiency King/Sleeper
• Ocean View 1 Bedroom
• Oceanfront 1 Bedroom Suite

Bringing a dog

Dogs are welcome in select pet-friendly units, within a policy that is genuinely enforced rather than nominal:

• Small dogs only, up to 20 lbs each, maximum of two per room
• $35 per night, per dog, capped at $350 per dog, per month
• Breed restrictions apply
• Dogs must be carried in elevators and kept leashed on property
• Dogs are not permitted on the pool deck, in food service areas, or in the exercise room
• Cats and other animals are not accepted

What the resort is like in winter

Myrtle Beach in winter is a quieter place than the one on the postcards, which is most of the appeal. On property, you have:

• Direct beach access
• An indoor pool, plus a heated oceanfront pool, a lazy river and hot tubs
• Azure, the on-site oceanfront restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner
• Ground Floor Cafe for coffee in the morning
• A fitness room with ellipticals, exercise machines and free weights

One honest caveat: Boomerang, the poolside bar, is seasonal, so do not plan a February afternoon around it. The indoor pool and the restaurant are the winter workhorses.
